On Monday Leila took two naps in her crib (45 and 30 minutes) and one in her car seat at Sam's Club 45-ish minutes) and Caleb napped for three hours! He fell asleep on my run to the park. Pretty good day, hot though. Grateful for our garage door opener so we can park inside! Only lasted a few minutes at the park. Leila is hard to shade and keep cool. She also doesn't handle the wind well, she still has the reflex to gasp and hold her breath.

Getting bigger

 Shifting Caleb's sleep schedule to a bedtime of 7-7:30 pm with assistance from Leila's doctor appointment Thursday that kept him up from his nap for an extra hour and a half. Friday we successfully had both kids still in bed at 6 am! Leila also only fed once between 8 pm and 6 am!

Caleb kept wanting to make sure the doctor and nurses weren't hurting Leila throughout her appointment. He cried more for her shots than she did. 

 Watched Luke on Wednesday and Baldwin girls Thursday. Caleb likes to play with friends but is starting to be more possessive of his things.

 We went to Waterway Square with Dad Friday afternoon to splash in the fountains and feed the fish. Apparently I didn't take any pictures playing in the fountains with the camera.

Saturday morning while Dad was playing basketball.

Saturday we exercised and did a lot of yard work (I took the kids to the park while Al mowed), showered, took naps and went to the community pool party. While putting Caleb's shoes on, I noticed he was hot but he's almost always hot and sweaty so other than making a comment to Al about it, didn't think much of it. At the party he splashed in the fountains a little, jumped in the bounce house, ate a little and went on the swing. 

He was pretty subdued as we left the park and went to Sam's Club but still happy and pointing out trucks as we drove. At Sam's club, we were almost done when Caleb started being fussy and trying to lay down in the cart... Unheard of for him! Allen picked him up and he was really hot. He almost fell asleep in Allen's arms and did fall asleep on the way home. 

Once home (5:15 pm), we checked his temperature (102.7 on the forehead) and gave him Tylenol. It was too early to put him to bed so we turned on Tangled as Allen held him and I nursed Leila. He went in and out of sleep for about ten minutes, with abnormally loud breathing and kept covering his face with his hands. All of the sudden (5:30 pm), his eyes shot open wide and he had a scared look on his face. Allen looked down as Caleb's eyes glazed over and he turned blue. Allen rolled Caleb on his side to ask me if I thought he looked blue and he stiffened up and started convulsing. This lasted two to three minutes, then while I was on the phone with 911, he started breathing again but was still unconscious, with his eyes open. 

The EMS supervisor arrived before the ambulance and gave Caleb oxygen and checked his vitals as Caleb began to become more lucid. His eyes started moving back and forth with no recognition of what was going on and then he fell asleep. As the firemen arrived with the defibrillator, the EMS guy downgraded Caleb's code/urgency level to a febrile seizure. They left and the ambulance arrived to transport Caleb to the hospital. As Allen carried Caleb to the ambulance, he woke up but still took another ten minutes before realizing that he didn't know where he was and didn't like the cords and things attached to him. 

I rode with him in the ambulance (no lights flashing) and he was too tired to even hold or play with Allen's iPhone, which is saying something. when we got to the hospital, he was crying and pointing to the door... Get me outta here!

The next five hours were lots of tests and crying and very nice nurses. It took three tries, the first two with him mummy-tied down with a sheet and four people holding him (he was stronger than they thought), to get a needle in to get blood for the blood work and start giving him fluids. Those two attempts were painful and unsuccessful, the only thing that calmed Caleb down was an America's Funniest Videos-type show. He thinks its funny when people drop things or fall down or get hit by a ball. 

After the first two times the called the NICU to send a nurse and she stayed to take care of Caleb until we were discharged around 11 pm. She got the IV in him much more easily and just had Allen holding him. Caleb peed just in time... Right before they were going to insert a catheter to get a urine sample. 

We were just waiting for them to determine the cause of the fever and it turns out he had a minor ear infection... A big scare for something so simple. 

Febrile seizures aren't necessarily caused by high fevers, he had a higher temperature on Sunday between doses of ibuprofen and Tylenol than he had before the seizure. It was just how quickly his fever spiked that caused it. We just have to watch out from now on if he starts running a temperature. Within 24 hours of being on an antibiotic he was back to normal... Running and laughing and playing.

(May 13-19) Leila's 2 months old!

*Disclaimer: most of this post was typed on my iPod during middle of the night sessions feeding Leila so they are not complete sentences/thoughts and if I wait to complete my thoughts, I probably won't ever finish a post again.

May 13-19, 2013

Leila (9 weeks old) had rough night and another episode Sunday night. Monday had to be held all day. Caleb and mom went to park. Caleb and Lizzi played in sprinklers and we all ate otter pops. 

Monday night, technically Tuesday morning, Leila rolled over from stomach to back on her own! Probably a fluke... But I was surprised to see her little open eyes staring at me when I glanced at the monitor.

Leila rolled over again! Smiles and coos a lot in response to us. Stops crying when Caleb holds her hand. Cries when he cries or screams, or is too rough with her. Stares at her hands with crossed eyes. Getting more coordinated at bringing hands to mouth. Tries to suck on hands all the time. Stands when being burped. Still arches back and coughs more (clearing reflux?). I'm up with her every day from 3/4 am til 5-ish and then Caleb is up so she stays up... she is starting to get overtired. Seems less lethargic, sleeping less soundly and not as frequently. Always used to just fall asleep in my arms throughout the day. Now she doesn't as much.

 Trying to break Caleb of 4:30 am wakeup habit. Falls asleep in stroller on the way home from the park, not long enough first nap and won't take a second nap. Still likes to test limits with hitting and time out. Asks to hold Leila and likes holding her for a long time.

 Other highlights with Aunt Lizzi this week: played at mall, rode trolley, saw the fish at Walmart, and Lizzi took care of Leila during Caleb's nap every day, letting me nap! Thank you Lizzi! The pictures of the trolley are on Lizzi's phone.

Friday morning Leila had an EKG and appointment with the pediatric cardiologist so Allen worked from home to go with me while Lizzi babysat Caleb. The appointment went well, although the hole was not smaller, she is showing no signs of heart failure so we have our next appointment in 6 weeks to see how she's doing then.

In the afternoon I thought it would be fun to go to the pool... I thought it was open so we all got ready, drove there and the pool was closed... so instead we played at spray ground. We went to Sonic on the way home and Caleb ate half of Lizzi's chicken sandwich and at least half of her shake! (pictures are on Allen's phone)

Allen started installing our garage door opener so we can park in the garage during the summer! Yeah!

Caleb has started to prefer eating out of our bowls than out of his own.

This is after I went to a baby shower for a friend and Lizzi babysat/watched Psych while Allen worked on the garage door.

Saturday Lizzi went home and I had to hold back tears since I won't see her again until after her mission (approx Dec 2014)! That day I also had a Primary temple trip I took Leila to while Allen stayed with Caleb.

 That night Caleb had babysitter (he was asleep when she got to our house and slept the whole time), we went to Houston Dynamo game. We got the tickets through Allen's work so we had fourth row seats behind the keeper and made it on TV (we watched later). They even bought us dinner and one of his clients held Leila for half of the game. It was our first Dynamo game and it was fun! Some day we may get season tickets.

Painting and Parks

May 6-12, 2013

Monday I took a three hour nap (6:15-9) while Lizzi and Grammy watched the kids. Caleb took his nap from 9-10:30 so Lizzi and I went on a run while he slept. I trimmed trees while Lizzi and Grammy entertained kids outside. Shower and Blues Clues, Caleb napped and I took Leila for a follow up with our pediatrician.

He brings a new level to the word bouncer. He gets flying in this thing!

Sometimes when my feet/knees are achy, I ask Caleb if we can read with our feet up. I guess it stuck because he has started to initiate it.

There was a fire on the house behind ours. We heard some sirens and then looked out the window while making cashew chicken and there was a firefighter busting through the roof! This is the second time Lizzi has visited that a house fire has started on the street behind us . . . Lizzi? We walked over there to see what was going on and Caleb loved the firetrucks and the bubbles (foam stuff from the firefighters). Meanwhile, Allen's bus broke down on the freeway and he was late getting home.

Other things that we did with Grammy and Lizzi here: Bear Branch park, painting boxes, temple, tree trimming, finished headboard and footboard.

He liked painting but didn't like when I got paint all over his foot for a mother's day card.

Went to waterway square, fed fish, played in fountain. I got hit right in the bum! Caleb got more and more confident playing in the water. By the end, he didn't mind getting soaked by the fountain and fell into the pool of water while splashing.

Caleb whips out words like lemonade and zipper unexpectedly. Sometimes I pick out other words among his jibber jabber. I bet that's what we sound like to him, which is why he does it... Blah blah blah outside blah blah blah shoes on blah blah blah. He also jumped and got both feet off the ground for the first time!

Mother's day: Allen attempted to give Leila a bottle so I could get a little more sleep. I got to go back to bed from 6:30-8:30 am. Allen and I went to the park with Caleb, he fell asleep on the way home. Had Lizzi's help while Allen played the organ (phew!). Caleb yelled to dad in Sacrament meeting and wanted to go sit with him. Caleb went to nursery with Lizzi and had fun (he usually just cries).
